When it comes to high-end SUVs, the Lexus GX 550 and the BMW X5 are two of the most respected models in the luxury SUV market. Both vehicles offer a blend of performance, luxury, and advanced technology, but they cater to different driving preferences and needs. While the Lexus GX 550 is renowned for its rugged off-road capability and classic luxury, the BMW X5 offers sophisticated on-road performance with a high-tech, luxurious interior. In this showdown, we’ll compare these two titans in terms of performance, design, technology, off-road capabilities, and pricing to help you make the best decision based on your needs.

Performance and Powertrain

When it comes to performance, both the Lexus GX 550 and the BMW X5 offer powerful engine options, but their driving characteristics vary significantly. The Lexus GX 550 comes equipped with a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, producing 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and comes with full-time four-wheel drive. The GX 550 is designed for those who seek a reliable off-road vehicle with a powerful engine that can tow heavy loads—its 9,096-pound towing capacity is ideal for hauling trailers, boats, or other heavy equipment. The GX is built on a body-on-frame platform, enhancing its ability to handle rough terrains with ease. This makes it an excellent choice for adventure seekers and families who need an off-road-ready SUV with luxury features.

On the other hand, the BMW X5 offers a broader range of powertrains, making it more versatile for different driving styles. The base model comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, delivering 375 horsepower, while the M60i variant features a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 523 horsepower. The X5 is also available in a plug-in hybrid version, the xDrive50e, which combines the inline-six engine with an electric motor, generating a total of 483 horsepower. While the Lexus GX 550 excels in off-road capabilities, the BMW X5 shines on-road, offering superior acceleration, handling, and a more refined driving experience. The X5 M variant, specifically, offers 617 horsepower, providing high-performance enthusiasts with the thrill they seek.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is another critical consideration for buyers, and here, the BMW X5 outshines the Lexus GX 550 in terms of gas mileage. The X5 xDrive40i with its turbocharged six-cylinder engine offers a combined EPA rating of about 22 mpg. The hybrid xDrive50e delivers a combined 26 mpg once the electric battery runs out. For those interested in a more eco-friendly option, the BMW X5 hybrid provides great fuel economy, especially for an SUV of its size.

In comparison, the Lexus GX 550 is less fuel-efficient, primarily due to its larger engine and heavier build. The GX offers an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, which is fairly typical for full-size SUVs with off-road capability. However, while the fuel economy isn’t as high as the X5, the GX compensates with its ruggedness and off-road prowess, which appeals to drivers who prioritize adventure over fuel savings.

Interior Design and Comfort

Both the Lexus GX 550 and BMW X5 offer top-tier luxury, but with different approaches. The Lexus GX 550 has a classic luxury SUV interior, offering three-row seating for up to seven passengers. The cabin is spacious, with premium leather upholstery, wood accents, and a user-friendly infotainment system featuring a 14-inch touchscreen. While the design of the GX 550 leans more towards traditional luxury, it still offers modern conveniences like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 for advanced driver-assistance features.

In contrast, the BMW X5 has a more modern and high-tech interior. The X5 offers seating for five passengers and a luxurious cabin with high-quality materials such as fine leather, real wood trims, and soft-touch plastics. The 12.3-inch digital display integrates with a curved touchscreen, offering a seamless interface for navigation, media, and vehicle settings. The X5 also boasts a premium sound system, gesture controls, and a suite of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The cabin is quiet, and the overall atmosphere is one of modern sophistication, making the BMW X5 ideal for those who prefer cutting-edge technology and sleek design in their vehicle.

Off-Road Capabilities

The Lexus GX 550 is designed with off-roading in mind. The full-time four-wheel-drive system, Crawl Control, and Multi-Terrain Select system provide excellent performance on rugged trails and in challenging weather conditions. With its body-on-frame construction, the GX 550 is built to tackle dirt roads, mud, snow, and rocky paths with confidence, making it a top choice for those who need a vehicle for outdoor adventures or who live in areas with challenging driving conditions.

The BMW X5, while capable of light off-roading, is primarily designed for on-road driving. It features xDrive, BMW’s all-wheel-drive system, but lacks the advanced off-road features found in the GX 550. The X5 is a much better performer on highways, with precise steering, superior handling, and advanced driving dynamics. However, if you’re looking for a vehicle primarily for off-road use, the Lexus GX 550 would be the more reliable option.

Towing Capacity

When it comes to towing, the Lexus GX 550 is the clear winner. With a towing capacity of 9,096 pounds, the GX is capable of hauling boats, campers, trailers, and heavy loads, making it a powerful choice for those who require significant towing ability. On the other hand, the BMW X5 can tow up to 7,200 pounds when equipped with the optional towing package, which is impressive for a luxury SUV but falls short of the GX 550’s capabilities.

Pricing and Value

Pricing for the 2025 Lexus GX 550 starts at around $65,000 for the base Premium trim, while higher trims like the Overtrail-Plus can cost upwards of $80,000 depending on configuration. The 2025 BMW X5 starts at about $68,000 for the xDrive40i model, with higher trims such as the M60i reaching over $90,000. The BMW X5 offers a more luxurious experience with more advanced technology and performance options, but the Lexus GX 550 offers a more rugged, off-road-capable package at a more affordable starting price.
