M-Pesa is one of the most popular mobile money services in Kenya, allowing you to send money, pay bills, and access other financial services via your mobile phone. If you’ve recently acquired a new SIM card, you’ll need to activate M-Pesa to start using these services. Activating M-Pesa on a new SIM is easy, and in this guide, we’ll walk you through the process to ensure you can start using M-Pesa on your new Safaricom SIM card.
Step 1: Insert the New SIM Card into Your Phone
To activate M-Pesa, start by inserting your new Safaricom SIM card into your phone.
- Turn off Your Phone: Power off your phone before inserting the new SIM.
- Insert the New SIM Card: Insert the new Safaricom SIM card into your phone’s SIM tray.
- Power on the Phone: Turn the phone back on and make sure it’s picking up the Safaricom network.
Step 2: Activate Your M-Pesa Account
If your new SIM card doesn’t already have M-Pesa activated, follow these steps:
- Dial the Activation Code: To activate M-Pesa, dial
*234#on your phone. This is the USSD code for accessing the M-Pesa menu. - Select “Activate M-Pesa”: From the menu, select the option for “Activate M-Pesa.” If this is your first time activating M-Pesa on your SIM, you’ll need to proceed with registration.
- Enter Your Personal Details: The system will prompt you to enter personal information, including:
- Your full name (as per the ID card)
- Your ID number (National ID or passport)
- KRA PIN (for tax purposes)
- Next of Kin’s information (for security purposes)
- Create an M-Pesa PIN: Once you’ve entered your details, you’ll be asked to create a 4-digit M-Pesa PIN. This PIN will be used to authorize all M-Pesa transactions, so choose something secure and memorable.
- Confirm Your Details: The system will ask you to confirm the details you’ve entered. Ensure that the information is correct before proceeding.
Step 3: Activate Your M-Pesa Account Through Safaricom Shop (if needed)
If you’re unable to activate M-Pesa via the USSD code or if you experience issues, you can also visit any Safaricom Shop for in-person assistance.
- Visit a Safaricom Shop: Take your new SIM card, ID, and KRA PIN (if applicable) to a Safaricom shop. The staff will assist you in activating your M-Pesa account.
- Verification Process: The shop staff will verify your identity and ensure all necessary documents are in place for activation.
- Activate and Set Up M-Pesa: Once verified, the staff will assist you in activating M-Pesa and setting up your M-Pesa PIN.
Step 4: Start Using M-Pesa on Your New SIM Card
Once activated, you can start using M-Pesa on your new SIM card. To access your M-Pesa menu, dial *234# and use the available services such as:
- Sending and receiving money
- Paying bills (e.g., electricity, water, and internet)
- Buying airtime
- Checking your balance and transactions
- Withdrawing cash from M-Pesa agents
Remember, your M-Pesa account is now linked to your new SIM card, and all future transactions will require your M-Pesa PIN for security.
Step 5: Recover Your M-Pesa Account (if migrating from another SIM)
If you’ve previously used M-Pesa on another Safaricom SIM card and are migrating to a new one, you may need to link your old M-Pesa account to the new SIM card. Here’s how:
- Call Safaricom Customer Care: Dial 100 from your Safaricom line or visit a Safaricom Shop to request for the transfer of your M-Pesa account to your new SIM.
- Provide Account Details: You’ll be asked to provide your old SIM card number and M-Pesa PIN to authenticate the transfer.
- Follow Up: After completing the process, you should receive a confirmation SMS indicating that your M-Pesa account has been successfully transferred to the new SIM.
