Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced additional flights to Kisumu this weekend to handle the surge in travelers attending the funeral of Raila Amollo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister. Thousands of mourners, politicians, and international guests are expected to travel to the Lakeside City for the ceremony. The airline’s move aims to make travel easier and more organized during this emotionally charged national event.
Growing Demand Spurs Schedule Changes
Passenger demand on the Nairobi–Kisumu route soared soon after Raila’s funeral plans were confirmed. Tickets sold out quickly, prompting the airline to act. To accommodate more travelers, Kenya Airways increased flight frequency and upgraded several aircraft. The adjustments also aim to minimize congestion and provide flexible travel options for both outbound and return journeys.
Updated Weekend Flight Schedule
To meet the surge, Kenya Airways revised its timetable. On Friday, flights KQ656 (1:30 PM) and KQ658 (7:00 PM) will operate between Nairobi and Kisumu. Saturday begins with KQ650 (6:50 AM), while KQ654 will use a Boeing 737 to offer more capacity. On Sunday and Monday, three flights — KQ654, KQ670, and KQ671 — will also operate using Boeing 737 aircraft. The larger jets provide more comfort, improved reliability, and additional seating for returning mourners.
A Tribute to National Unity
Kenya Airways said the decision reflects its support for national solidarity during this historic moment. Officials expect heavy traffic at Kisumu International Airport as citizens, leaders, and dignitaries gather for the state funeral. The airline emphasized that its adjustments will make it easier for Kenyans to participate in mourning a leader who shaped the country’s democracy and political identity.
Boost to Kisumu’s Tourism and Business Sector
The influx of travelers has energized Kisumu’s economy. Local hotels are fully booked, and restaurants are operating at full capacity. Traders have reported a rise in demand for goods and services as more visitors arrive. The increase in flights will not only ease travel pressure but also generate short-term revenue for the hospitality and transport sectors.
Enhancing Comfort and Efficiency
By upgrading multiple routes to Boeing 737 aircraft, Kenya Airways has improved comfort and reliability. The aircraft provide spacious cabins, better in-flight amenities, and higher safety standards. Additional ground staff have been deployed at both Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Kisumu International Airport to ensure smooth check-ins and timely departures.
Honoring Raila Odinga’s Legacy
Raila Odinga’s influence spans generations, and his funeral has united the country in grief and pride. Kenya Airways’ decision to expand flights reflects the importance of enabling Kenyans from all regions to attend his final farewell. The move also reinforces the airline’s reputation as a dependable national carrier that connects people during critical moments in the country’s history.
Commitment to Reliable Service
Kenya Airways reaffirmed its commitment to respond quickly to passenger needs during national events. The airline continues to monitor demand and adjust schedules when necessary. As Kenya prepares to honor one of its most iconic leaders, the increased Kisumu flights ensure safe, dignified, and convenient travel for all.
