The Rise of Muthokinju Paints and Cement

Few brands in Kenya’s construction industry command as much recognition as Muthokinju Paints and Cement. From a modest hardware shop in Nairobi to a nationwide retail powerhouse, Muthokinju has become a trusted name for paints, cement, and building supplies. The story of this company is one of perseverance, vision, and family unity. It begins with a couple who turned a failed restaurant venture into one of Kenya’s most successful family-owned businesses.

The Founders: Barnabas and Susan Kimani

Muthokinju Paints and Cement was founded in 1995 by Barnabas Njuguna and Susan Muthoni Kimani, a visionary couple who saw potential in the growing construction sector. The company’s name—Muthokinju—is a blend of their names: MUTHO from Muthoni, KI from Kimani, and NJU from Njuguna. Their journey started with a single shop in Kasarani, Nairobi, selling paint and building materials. At the time, Susan had recently closed her restaurant business at Kenyatta Market after realizing that the food industry was unpredictable. The couple decided to venture into hardware, focusing on durable and essential products like paint, cement, and iron sheets.

Their early years were marked by resilience and hard work. Susan handled daily operations, managing customer relations and suppliers, while Barnabas oversaw finances and logistics. In 2004, they formally registered Muthokinju Paints and Cement as a limited company, marking the start of a new era of growth and professional management.

The Second Generation: Benjamin Kimani’s Leadership

In 2011, their son Benjamin Kimani took over as Managing Director, ushering in a modern era for the family business. Under his leadership, Muthokinju transitioned from a traditional retail hardware into a structured and tech-driven corporation. Benjamin, who was only 24 at the time, introduced new management systems, digital tools, and expansion strategies that helped scale operations across the country.

His wife, Sarafina Njatha, later joined the company as Operations Director, ensuring continuity of the family’s legacy while maintaining operational excellence. The founders, Barnabas and Susan, now serve as board advisors, offering mentorship and strategic guidance. This smooth generational transition—often a challenge in family-owned companies—has allowed Muthokinju to remain stable and innovative.

Growth, Expansion, and Market Reach

From its humble beginnings, Muthokinju Paints and Cement has grown into one of Kenya’s largest distributors of building materials. The company now operates over 17 branches across the country, including major towns like Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Thika, and Mombasa. It employs more than 500 staff and serves contractors, developers, and homeowners in 21 counties.

The company’s product range includes paints, cement, waterproofing materials, metal fittings, adhesives, and construction accessories. Muthokinju is also ISO 9001:2015 certified, a mark of its commitment to quality management and customer satisfaction. Its reputation for reliability and customer service has made it a preferred partner for both small-scale builders and large construction projects across Kenya.

Innovation and Technology

One of Benjamin Kimani’s major achievements has been the digitization of Muthokinju’s operations. He introduced paperless systems, inventory tracking software, and a centralized logistics platform to streamline deliveries. The company has also embraced e-commerce, allowing customers to place orders online and receive deliveries anywhere in Kenya.

Muthokinju’s adoption of technology has increased efficiency, reduced costs, and improved customer experience. These innovations have set new standards for other players in the building materials sector. The company also plans to introduce digital tools such as a “paint calculator” to help customers estimate product quantities before purchase, ensuring convenience and transparency.

Challenges and Family Business Dynamics

Like many family-owned enterprises, Muthokinju Paints and Cement has faced its share of challenges, including balancing growth with governance and succession planning. To prevent internal conflict and ensure long-term stability, the Kimani family created a family constitution—a formal document outlining how future generations will manage ownership, leadership, and profit distribution. This structure ensures professionalism and sustainability, preserving the founders’ vision for decades to come.

The company has also faced operational challenges related to supply chain disruptions, competition from multinational brands, and rising production costs. However, its deep customer loyalty, strategic partnerships, and focus on quality have kept it ahead of competitors.

Future Plans and Vision

Looking ahead, Muthokinju Paints and Cement aims to expand into new regions and invest in digital customer engagement tools. The company plans to open more branches in Eldoret, Meru, Kitui, and Naivasha while strengthening its logistics and distribution network. It also intends to expand its partnerships with global brands in paints, waterproofing, and adhesives, offering a wider product range to its customers.

The long-term goal is to transform Muthokinju into a regional brand with a presence in East Africa, setting new benchmarks in customer experience and product accessibility. The company also continues to invest in sustainability, waste reduction, and environmentally friendly materials to align with modern construction standards.
