If you are visiting Nairobi and looking for a meaningful, family-friendly experience, the Giraffe Centre is one of the best places to start. Located in the calm, green suburb of Lang’ata, about 15 kilometres from the city centre, the centre offers a rare chance to interact closely with endangered Rothschild’s giraffes.

Managed by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW Kenya), the Giraffe Centre blends wildlife conservation, education, and tourism. It attracts local residents, international visitors, and school groups who want to learn about giraffe protection while enjoying a relaxed outdoor experience.

Giraffe Centre Entrance Fees Explained

The entrance fees at the Giraffe Centre are structured to make the experience accessible to both residents and non-residents. Every ticket purchased directly supports giraffe conservation, habitat protection, and environmental education programs across Kenya.

The centre is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including weekends and public holidays. Most visitors spend between one and a half to two hours exploring the facility, feeding giraffes, and enjoying the surrounding nature.

Payments are accepted via M-PESA, debit card, or credit card. Visitors paying resident rates must present valid Kenyan or East African identification, such as a national ID, passport, or work permit.

School visits should be booked at least one week in advance. Morning hours, especially between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., are recommended for educational groups.

What to Expect During Your Visit

A visit to the Giraffe Centre goes far beyond simply viewing animals from a distance. The highlight is the elevated feeding platform, where visitors hand-feed giraffes using specially prepared pellets provided by the centre. The experience of standing eye-to-eye with a giraffe often becomes the most memorable part of the visit.

The centre also features an education hall with informative displays about giraffe species, conservation challenges, and breeding programs. These exhibits help visitors understand why Rothschild’s giraffes are endangered and how conservation efforts are making a difference.

Nature lovers can explore a peaceful walking trail that connects the centre to the Gogo River Bird Sanctuary. The trail is rich in birdlife and indigenous plants, making it ideal for photography, birdwatching, and quiet reflection.

Tips for Planning a Smooth Visit

Arriving early in the day improves your chances of interacting with active giraffes and avoiding queues, especially on weekends and public holidays. Morning visits also provide better lighting for photos.

Wear comfortable shoes, as parts of the centre involve walking on natural paths. A hat and sunscreen are useful on sunny days, while a light jacket helps during cooler mornings.

Visitors should follow all safety guidelines provided by staff. Sudden movements, loud noises, or feeding giraffes with outside food are discouraged. Respecting these rules ensures both visitor safety and animal well-being.

Since much of the experience takes place outdoors, checking the weather forecast before leaving home can help you plan better.

Getting to the Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre is located on Nyumbi Road, off Duma Road, in Lang’ata. It is easily accessible from Nairobi’s city centre and nearby suburbs.

Visitors using public transport can board matatus heading toward Hardy or Karen and alight at the Giraffe Centre junction. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt are also widely available and convenient.

For group bookings or further inquiries, the centre can be contacted directly through:

Why the Giraffe Centre Is Worth Visiting

The Giraffe Centre stands out as one of Nairobi’s most rewarding attractions because it combines fun, learning, and conservation. The entrance fees remain affordable, and every visit directly contributes to protecting the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe.

Whether you are a tourist exploring Nairobi or a local looking for a meaningful day out, the Giraffe Centre offers an unforgettable experience. It allows you to connect with wildlife, support conservation, and create lasting memories with Kenya’s gentle giants.
