WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging apps, containing important conversations, media, and data for many users. Whether you’re switching to a new phone, preparing for a factory reset, or troubleshooting issues, backing up your WhatsApp chats is a crucial step to avoid losing valuable messages, media files, and conversations.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process to back up your WhatsApp chats, including how to back up your messages and media to Google Drive or local storage. We’ll also discuss how to verify the backup before proceeding with a factory reset to ensure that your data is safely stored.

Why Backing Up WhatsApp Chats Is Important

When you perform a factory reset on your smartphone, all data stored on your phone is erased, including your WhatsApp messages and media. This is why it’s crucial to back up your WhatsApp data beforehand to ensure you don’t lose anything important.

Here’s why you should back up your chats:

  • Prevent Data Loss: If you don’t back up your WhatsApp chats, you risk losing important messages, media files, and contact information.
  • Transfer Chats to a New Device: If you’re moving to a new phone, backing up your chats ensures that you can easily restore them on your new device.
  • Easy Recovery: WhatsApp offers a simple and seamless way to recover chats after a factory reset, provided that you’ve backed them up beforehand.

How to Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats

There are two main options for backing up your WhatsApp chats: Google Drive and local storage. Below are the steps for both methods:

Option 1: Back Up to Google Drive

Google Drive offers cloud storage, which allows you to back up your WhatsApp chats and media and access them from any device. Here’s how to back up your WhatsApp data to Google Drive:

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on Your Phone

Launch the WhatsApp app on your Vivo smartphone. Ensure that you’re connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Step 2: Access Settings

In the upper-right corner of the WhatsApp app, tap the three vertical dots to open the menu. From the dropdown, select Settings.

Step 3: Go to Chats

In the Settings menu, tap on Chats to access your chat settings.

Step 4: Select Chat Backup

From the Chats menu, tap on Chat backup. This section allows you to manage your WhatsApp backup settings.

Step 5: Toggle On “Back Up Using Cellular” (Optional)

If you want to use mobile data for the backup, toggle on Back up using cellular. If you prefer to use Wi-Fi, leave this option off to avoid using your mobile data.

Step 6: Enable “Include Videos” (Optional)

If you want to back up videos along with your chats and photos, toggle on the Include videos option. Keep in mind that backing up videos may require more storage space and time, depending on the size of the videos you have.

Step 7: Tap Back Up

Once you’ve configured your backup preferences, tap the Back Up button to start the backup process. WhatsApp will now back up your messages and media to Google Drive. The process may take some time, depending on your internet connection and the amount of data being backed up.

Option 2: Back Up to Local Storage

If you don’t want to back up your data to Google Drive and prefer to store it locally, WhatsApp also allows you to back up your chats and media to your device’s internal storage.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp Settings

Open the WhatsApp app on your phone and go to Settings by tapping on the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Tap on Chats

Next, tap on Chats in the Settings menu.

Step 3: Select Chat Backup

Select Chat backup from the options.

Step 4: Tap Back Up to Local Storage

Instead of selecting Google Drive, you can tap the Back Up button under the Local backup section. WhatsApp will back up your data to your device’s storage.

Step 5: Verify Backup Completion

Once the backup is complete, you can check the status in the Chat backup section to ensure everything is safely stored. You will see a timestamp indicating the last backup time.

Note: Local backups are stored on your phone and are only accessible on that specific device. If you perform a factory reset or move to a new device, local backups may not be recoverable, which is why cloud backups (via Google Drive) are recommended for long-term storage.
