Taking a screenshot on a Mac is simple once you know the right shortcuts. Whether you want to capture the entire screen, a specific window, or just a selected portion, macOS offers multiple built-in tools to get the job done. In this guide, we’ll show you how to screenshot on Mac quickly and efficiently.

1. Capture the Entire Screen

Press: Command (⌘) + Shift + 3

  • This captures your entire screen.
  • The screenshot will automatically save to your desktop (or clipboard if you press Control as well).

2. Capture a Selected Portion of the Screen

Press: Command (⌘) + Shift + 4

  • Your cursor will turn into a crosshair.
  • Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
  • Release the mouse to take the screenshot.

3. Capture a Specific Window

Press: Command (⌘) + Shift + 4 + Spacebar

  • The cursor changes to a camera icon.
  • Hover over the window you want to capture.
  • Click to take the screenshot.

4. Use the Screenshot Toolbar (macOS Mojave and Later)

Press: Command (⌘) + Shift + 5

  • A toolbar appears with options to:
    • Capture the entire screen.
    • Capture a selected window.
    • Capture a custom area.
    • Record your screen (video).

This is the most versatile option for screenshots and recordings.

5. Capture the Touch Bar (MacBook Pro only)

Press: Command (⌘) + Shift + 6

  • This takes a screenshot of the Touch Bar.

Where Are Screenshots Saved on Mac?

  • By default, screenshots save to your Desktop.
  • You can change the default location by opening the Screenshot Toolbar (⌘ + Shift + 5) and selecting “Options.”

Pro Tips

  • Add Control to any shortcut to copy the screenshot to your clipboard instead of saving it. Example: Control + Command + Shift + 3.
  • Use Preview app to annotate and edit screenshots.
  • Use Quick Look (Spacebar) to view screenshots instantly without opening an app.

Final Thoughts

Learning how to screenshot on Mac is easy once you master the shortcuts. From capturing the full screen to selecting a portion or recording your screen, macOS provides flexible options for every need. Try these methods and choose the one that works best for you.
