Sending money across different mobile networks in Kenya is now simple and convenient thanks to M-Pesa Tuma Popote. This service allows Safaricom customers to send money directly from M-Pesa to users on other mobile money platforms, including Airtel Money and T-Kash on Telkom. As a result, users no longer need to rely solely on M-Pesa-to-M-Pesa transfers to move funds.

M-Pesa Tuma Popote has made cross-network transactions faster, more secure, and more accessible. Whether you are sending money to family, friends, or business partners, the process is straightforward and reliable. This guide explains how the service works, the step-by-step procedure, limits, charges, and what to do in case of mistakes.

Understanding M-Pesa Tuma Popote

M-Pesa Tuma Popote is available to all Safaricom subscribers who are registered on M-Pesa. The service enables users to send money to customers on other mobile networks who are registered on Airtel Money or T-Kash. Unlike regular M-Pesa transfers, Tuma Popote transactions are completed through the USSD shortcode *334# rather than the M-Pesa app or SIM Toolkit.

Once the transfer is completed, the money is credited instantly to the recipient’s mobile money wallet on their respective network. The recipient can then withdraw or use the funds through their provider’s standard mobile money options. Normal daily M-Pesa transaction limits apply, and Safaricom uses the same tariffs as standard on-net transfers.

Step-by-Step Procedure to Send Money Using Tuma Popote

Follow these steps carefully to send money to another network:

  1. Dial *334# on your Safaricom line
  2. Select Send Money from the menu
  3. Choose Send to Other Network
  4. Enter the recipient’s mobile number
  5. Input the amount you want to send
  6. Confirm the details displayed on the screen
  7. Enter your M-Pesa PIN to complete the transaction

Once the transaction is successful, you will receive a confirmation message from M-Pesa. The recipient will also receive a notification from their mobile money provider confirming receipt of the funds.

This process also works when sending money to users who are not registered on Airtel Money or T-Kash. In such cases, the transaction is treated as a transfer to an unregistered user, and the applicable charges will apply.

What to Do If You Send Money to the Wrong Number

Mistakes can happen during mobile money transactions. If you accidentally send money to the wrong number using Tuma Popote, it is important to act quickly.

You should immediately contact Safaricom customer care by dialing 100 or 200 from your Safaricom line. You can also send an SMS to the same numbers with details of the transaction, including the amount sent, time, and the incorrect number. Safaricom will guide you through the reversal process and advise on the next steps.

Reversals depend on whether the recipient has withdrawn or used the funds, so reporting the issue as soon as possible increases the chances of recovery.

Limits and Charges for Tuma Popote Transfers

Safaricom has set clear limits for sending money using Tuma Popote to ensure security and proper usage.

  • Minimum amount per transaction: Ksh 101
  • Maximum amount per transaction: Ksh 150,000
  • Daily M-Pesa transaction limits apply

The charges for sending money via Tuma Popote are the same as standard M-Pesa on-net tariffs. This means you do not pay extra for sending money to another network compared to sending to another M-Pesa user.

For recipients, withdrawal charges depend on their mobile money provider. Airtel Money and T-Kash apply their own withdrawal tariffs when the recipient chooses to cash out the funds.

How Recipients Access Money Sent via Tuma Popote

When you send money through Tuma Popote, the funds are deposited directly into the recipient’s mobile money wallet. Airtel customers access the money through the Airtel Money menu, while Telkom users access it through the T-Kash menu.

From there, recipients can withdraw cash, pay bills, buy airtime, or transfer the money to other users, depending on their provider’s available services. Withdrawal fees are determined by the recipient’s network and not by Safaricom.

Advantages of Using M-Pesa Tuma Popote

M-Pesa Tuma Popote offers several benefits that make it a preferred option for cross-network transfers:

  • Convenience
You can send money to users on other networks without switching services
  • Speed
    Transfers are processed instantly
  • Cost efficiency
Charges are the same as regular M-Pesa transfers
  • Wider reach
Ideal for sending money to users who are not on Safaricom

These advantages make Tuma Popote especially useful for businesses, families, and individuals who transact across different mobile networks.

Final Thoughts

M-Pesa Tuma Popote has transformed how mobile money users in Kenya send funds across networks. By offering a simple, fast, and affordable way to transfer money to Airtel Money and T-Kash users, the service has improved financial connectivity nationwide. By following the correct procedure, understanding the limits, and acting quickly in case of errors, you can use Tuma Popote confidently for everyday transactions.
