The Huawei Y7 (2018) was launched in April 2018 as an entry-level smartphone aimed at users seeking essential smartphone features at an affordable price. Positioned below the Y7 Prime and Y7 Pro, it stripped down certain features to maintain its budget-friendly tag but still offered a large 5.99-inch display, Snapdragon 430 chipset, and a clean, modern design.

Weighing just 155 grams and built at 7.8mm thickness, the phone was slim and lightweight. Huawei paired it with a 16GB storage capacity, expandable via microSD, and 2GB of RAM, making it a modest performer suitable for calls, messaging, social media, and light multimedia use. Despite its simplicity, the Y7 (2018) embodied Huawei’s vision of making smartphones accessible to everyone.

Design and Build Quality

The Huawei Y7 (2018) featured the modern 18:9 display aspect ratio that gave it a premium look for its price segment. Its slim profile and lightweight build made it pocket-friendly, while the plastic frame and back panel provided durability. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor ensured security while keeping the design minimal and user-friendly.

Available in Black, Blue, and Gold, it appealed to a wide range of users seeking a stylish yet affordable smartphone.

Display and Multimedia

The 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen offered a 720 x 1440 resolution with about 269 ppi density. While not as sharp as Full HD panels, it was bright and colorful enough for watching videos, browsing, and general use. The 18:9 aspect ratio gave it a modern, tall design and a better experience for apps and social media feeds.

For music and radio lovers, Huawei kept the 3.5mm headphone jack and included FM Radio support, while the loudspeaker performed adequately for calls and casual media playback.

Camera Experience

The 13MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus captured clear shots in daylight and supported HDR and panorama modes for enhanced results. It could record 1080p video at 30fps, making it a decent option for casual photography.

The 8MP selfie camera supported 1080p recording and delivered good results for social media, though it lacked advanced modes. Despite being an entry-level device, the inclusion of a rear LED flash and camera enhancements made it competitive in its class.

Performance and Software

Powered by the Snapdragon 430 chipset and paired with 2GB RAM, the Y7 (2018) handled everyday tasks like calls, messaging, light multitasking, and social apps smoothly. The Adreno 505 GPU enabled light gaming, though it wasn’t built for heavy titles.

Running on Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8, it featured Huawei’s optimizations such as app cloning, battery-saving modes, and a clean interface. However, with only 16GB of storage, expanding via the dedicated microSD card slot was almost a necessity.

Battery and Connectivity

The 3000mAh battery provided a full day of use under normal conditions, thanks to the efficient Snapdragon 430 processor. While there was no fast charging, the battery remained reliable for budget users.

Connectivity included dual SIM LTE support, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS/GLONASS, and microUSB 2.0. An added bonus was NFC support on certain models (LDN-L01).
