The India AI Impact Summit started this Monday in New Delhi, marking a historic shift for global technology governance. Consequently, this major event represents the first time a global summit of this scale takes place within the developing world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed delegates via social media, emphasizing a human-centric approach to progress. Furthermore, Indian officials hope the India AI Impact Summit will amplify the voices of Global South nations in the race for digital regulation. Therefore, large banners featuring the Prime Minister now line Delhi’s main roads, signaling the high stakes of this week’s discussions.

Top executives from the world’s most influential tech firms are currently arriving for the India AI Impact Summit. Specifically, attendees include Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. These leaders join Microsoft and Amazon in a massive investment wave. In fact, these companies have already committed $68 billion to Indian cloud and AI infrastructure through 2030. On Thursday, Prime Minister Modi will share the stage with French President Emmanuel Macron. Their joint appearance underscores the diplomatic importance of the India AI Impact Summit for bilateral relations.

India currently positions itself as a global hotspot for application-led innovation. While the U.S. and China lead in foundational models, India focuses on large-scale deployment instead. The government’s recent Economic Survey suggests that chasing “mega-models” is less effective than practical tools. This strategy clearly works, as India became OpenAI’s largest user market by late 2025. With over 72 million daily ChatGPT users, the India AI Impact Summit highlights a nation ready for mass adoption. However, experts at the event also warn about potential job losses in India’s $283 billion IT sector.

The scale of the India AI Impact Summit is unprecedented for an artificial intelligence event. Over 250,000 visitors will explore a 70,000-square-metre expo at the Bharat Mandapam convention complex. Moreover, this influx of international delegates has caused luxury hotel prices in Delhi to skyrocket. Some suites now list for over $33,000 per night, reflecting the massive demand. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India issued a circular allowing virtual hearings to avoid summit-related traffic. As the India AI Impact Summit continues, the world watches to see if these talks lead to enforceable global outcomes.
