Filing taxes is a legal requirement for every Kenyan with a KRA PIN, whether employed, self-employed, or unemployed. Thanks to the KRA iTax portal, you can now complete the process fully online without visiting KRA offices. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to file taxes online in Kenya.

Requirements Before Filing

  • A valid KRA PIN and iTax account
  • Password to your iTax account
  • P9 form (for employed persons)
  • Details of income, expenses, and withholding certificates (for self-employed/businesses)
  • Internet access and a computer or smartphone

Step-by-Step Process of Filing Taxes Online

  • Visit the KRA iTax portal: https://itax.kra.go.ke.
  • Log in with your KRA PIN and password.
  • Under “Returns,” select File Returns.
  • Choose the type of return:
    • Employment Income (P9 Form) → For employees.
    • Nil Return → If you had no income in the year.
    • Business Income → For self-employed and businesses.
  • Fill in the online form or download the Excel sheet provided.
  • Upload completed returns (Excel form) if applicable.
  • Click Submit.
  • Download and save your Acknowledgement Receipt (PDF) as proof of filing.

Filing Nil Returns

If you did not earn any income in a given year, you must still file a Nil Return:

  • Log in to iTax.
  • Select Nil Return under “File Returns.”
  • Confirm your details and submit.
  • Download the acknowledgement slip.

Paying Taxes Online

If you have tax due after filing, you can generate a Payment Slip (PRN) on iTax and pay via:

  • M-Pesa (Paybill: 572572, account = PRN)
  • Banks integrated with KRA
  • Online banking channels

How to Do Government Forms Online

Apart from taxes, many government services in Kenya are available online via eCitizen and other portals. You can:

  • Apply for a passport via eCitizen.
  • Register a business online.
  • Apply for Good Conduct Certificate (Police Clearance).
  • Renew your driving license.
  • Apply for birth and death certificates.

Steps are similar:

  • Create an account on eCitizen.
  • Log in and choose the government service you need.
  • Fill in the digital form, upload documents, and pay online.
  • Download the acknowledgement slip or wait for notification.

Conclusion

Learning how to file taxes online in Kenya is simple with the KRA iTax portal. Ensure you have your KRA PIN, P9 form, and accurate financial details before filing. Beyond taxes, Kenyans can now complete many government forms online through eCitizen, saving time and reducing paperwork. Filing on time not only keeps you compliant but also avoids penalties.
