The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is currently grappling with severe weather conditions as a powerful storm, brought on by the “Al Bashayer” low-pressure system, has swept across the country, causing widespread disruptions. With heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail affecting major cities like Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah, residents and travelers are facing significant challenges. This article explores the impact of the storm on UAE flights, traffic, and public safety, and provides crucial information for residents and travelers navigating this extreme weather event.

Flight Cancellations and Delays at Dubai International Airport (DXB)

Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, has seen a considerable number of flight cancellations and delays due to the ongoing storm. Major airlines, including Emirates and Flydubai, were forced to ground flights or reschedule departures as the storm caused dangerous conditions for takeoff and landing.

Why Flights Are Affected by the Storm

The combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and poor visibility has made flying dangerous. The crosswinds and low visibility have significantly slowed down the rate of takeoffs and landings, resulting in a backlog of flights. Airports have been advised to delay operations to ensure passenger safety and to avoid potential accidents.

Emirates, one of the UAE’s flagship carriers, announced the cancellation of several international flights, including routes to Tehran, Frankfurt, and Colombo on December 19, 2025. In addition to these cancellations, the storm’s impact on airport access roads has made it difficult for airport staff and passengers to get to the airport, further complicating flight schedules.

Traffic Chaos Across Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah

While air travel has been severely disrupted, ground transportation has also been significantly affected by the storm. Major roads in Dubai and Sharjah, including Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Ittihad Road, have become waterlogged, causing massive traffic jams. Reduced visibility due to the heavy rain and strong winds further complicated driving conditions, leading to accidents and slower traffic flow.

The Dubai Police have issued repeated warnings about the risks of hydroplaning and urged motorists to maintain safe distances while driving in these hazardous conditions. For many commuters, the metro system became the safest and most reliable option for travel during the storm, as road traffic came to a standstill in some parts of the city.

Sharjah’s Struggles with Flooded Roads

Sharjah, a neighboring emirate, was hit hard by the storm’s aftermath. Internal roads, including Al Taawun Street, were heavily flooded, making daily commutes a nightmare. In some areas, travel times were tripled as vehicles struggled to navigate through deep puddles and waterlogged streets. The government deployed emergency teams to pump out water from flood-prone areas, but the storm’s intensity made it difficult to mitigate the situation in time.

Safety Alerts and Warnings from Authorities

As the storm continues to wreak havoc, authorities in the UAE have issued several safety alerts. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has warned of flash floods, dangerous downdrafts, and rough seas, urging residents to avoid flood-prone areas and stay indoors during the worst of the storm.

In addition to the flash flood risks, reports from Ras Al Khaimah indicate that hail and dangerous winds have contributed to significant damage in certain areas. Tragically, a construction wall collapsed during the heavy rain, resulting in a fatality in the emirate. This tragic incident highlights the extreme danger posed by the storm and underscores the need for caution.

Remote Work Advisory to Reduce Traffic

To alleviate the strain on the roads and ensure public safety, the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has advised private sector firms to allow employees to work from home on December 19, 2025. This advisory is intended to reduce the number of vehicles on the road during the peak of the storm, minimizing traffic congestion and preventing accidents.

What Travelers and Residents Need to Know

  1. Flight Status Updates: Passengers flying out of the UAE should contact their airlines to verify the status of their flights before heading to the airport. Storm-related delays and cancellations are expected, and being proactive will help avoid unnecessary stress at the airport.
  2. Avoid Flood-Prone Areas: With the risk of flash floods, it’s important for residents to avoid valleys, low-lying areas, and other flood-prone regions. Stay updated with weather reports and follow local authorities’ advice.
  3. Travel Smart: If you must drive, be cautious and drive at reduced speeds. Avoid congested areas and be aware of waterlogged streets that could cause your vehicle to stall or lose traction.
  4. Stay Indoors: The storm has caused significant damage in some regions, including power outages and hazardous conditions. Stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, and keep an emergency kit with essentials like water, food, and a flashlight.

The UAE’s response to the current storm highlights the importance of preparedness and caution in the face of extreme weather conditions. While the storm has caused considerable disruptions to both air travel and daily commuting, taking proactive measures such as checking flight status and following safety guidelines can help minimize the impact of these dangerous conditions. Authorities and airlines continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are urged to remain alert as the storm progresses.
