UDA-ODM By-Elections Victory: A Vote of Confidence for Ruto?

Winnie Odinga, the youngest daughter of the late Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, has become one of the most controversial and disruptive figures within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). At just 35 years old, and with barely a decade in active politics, Winnie is stepping into the limelight, challenging the established leadership of the party, and pushing for a generational shift in the ODM’s direction.

As ODM grapples with its future following the death of Raila Odinga, the party’s internal struggles and its relationship with President William Ruto’s government have ignited intense political debates. Winnie has taken a bold stance, openly questioning the competence of her father’s close allies, including her uncle, Senator Oburu Oginga, who is currently serving as the acting party leader. Her criticisms, however, have not been without resistance, especially from veteran figures within the party who argue that Winnie’s lack of experience may hinder her ability to lead ODM through this critical transition period.

This article delves into Winnie Odinga’s rise as a political force, her vision for ODM’s future, and the contentious internal battle over her political positioning as she seeks to inherit her father’s political mantle.

Winnie’s Disruption of ODM’s Status Quo

Winnie Odinga has always been in the political shadow of her father, Raila, who was synonymous with opposition politics in Kenya for decades. However, with Raila’s passing, Winnie has begun to carve out her own political identity, challenging not only the old guard within ODM but also President Ruto’s broad-based government, which ODM has been involved with. Winnie has firmly stated that “ODM is not for sale”, signaling her belief that the party must remain true to its ideals and not be absorbed into any political deals that would undermine its independence.

Winnie’s recent statements have raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. She openly criticized senior party leaders, accusing them of engaging in secretive negotiations that could lead to the sale of the party. She called for an immediate National Delegates Conference (NDC) to elect a new leadership slate, emphasizing that ODM’s future should not be decided behind closed doors or in private meetings. Her stance challenges not just the internal dynamics of ODM, but also its engagement with President Ruto, especially as the country heads toward the 2027 elections.

The Generational Shift: Is ODM Ready for a Youth Takeover?

One of Winnie’s primary goals appears to be a generational reset within ODM, a call for a fresh leadership slate that would be more in tune with the aspirations of the youth. She has voiced her belief that the party’s leadership should not be limited to those who have spent years in the political trenches, but rather should reflect the younger, more dynamic segment of the Kenyan electorate.

This generational change is particularly evident in her criticisms of the ongoing leadership structure within ODM. She argues that the current leadership is too entrenched in old political deals, and that it is crucial for the party to distance itself from these alliances to ensure its relevance. Her call for a youth-led party has resonated with some sections of ODM, particularly younger members and supporters who feel that the party has drifted too far from its grassroots base under the leadership of older figures.

Winnie’s vision for ODM is one that is more connected to the people, particularly the youth, who she believes are increasingly disillusioned with the party’s current trajectory. Her comments have brought attention to the division within ODM over the party’s relationship with Ruto’s government, with a significant faction of young party members questioning whether aligning with the president is in the best interests of the party or its supporters.

The ODM-Ruto Equation: Navigating a Complicated Relationship

Winnie’s challenges go beyond internal ODM politics; she has also questioned the party’s continued role in President William Ruto’s administration. ODM’s current relationship with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has been a point of contention within the party, and Winnie has openly criticized the ODM-UDA deal as “complicated” and lacking the political mandate to renegotiate its terms.

Her criticism is rooted in the belief that the deal, which was brokered under Raila’s leadership, has not been adequately reexamined since his passing. While some ODM leaders, particularly Oburu Oginga, have been keen on maintaining cordial relations with Ruto’s government, others, especially the youth wing, feel that this compromises ODM’s identity and dilutes its opposition role. Winnie has strongly suggested that the party must decide whether to back Ruto in 2027 or to field its own candidate, a decision that could determine ODM’s direction in the coming years.

This internal rift is emblematic of the broader struggle within ODM. There is a growing faction within the party that feels ODM should not be part of Ruto’s government, while others are more pragmatic, believing that the party’s continued cooperation with the government is vital for its survival and relevance. Winnie’s insistence on a “youth takeover” of the party speaks directly to this internal divide, and her calls for a fresh leadership slate suggest that she may be positioning herself as the face of a new, more assertive ODM.

The Generational Divide: A Family Affair or a Political Necessity?

Despite her growing influence, not everyone in ODM is convinced that Winnie is ready to assume the leadership role. Some veteran ODM figures have expressed doubts about her political experience and readiness to guide the party through this challenging period. Critics, such as Robert Alai, a Nairobi County Assembly member, argue that Winnie still requires mentorship and cannot simply inherit her father’s mantle without a clear track record of leadership.

On the other hand, supporters of Winnie argue that her boldness and her ability to speak directly to the frustrations of the youth make her a natural successor to Raila’s political legacy. Joseph Mgeni, an ODM activist from Mombasa, says that Winnie has already shown signs of emerging as her father’s natural heir. She has actively pushed for greater youth involvement in the party, advocating for policies that resonate with the younger generation of Kenyans, who have often felt disconnected from the political establishment.

However, there are concerns, particularly from Raila’s stronghold in Kisumu, where some members feel that ODM should not become a family inheritance. There is a lingering fear that if Winnie takes over too quickly, it could lead to the party being seen as a personal fiefdom rather than a broad-based political movement. This sentiment suggests that ODM’s future may hinge not only on generational change but also on maintaining a delicate balance between familial leadership and democratic governance within the party.

Winnie Odinga’s Political Future: A Leader in the Making?

As the political battle for ODM’s future intensifies, Winnie Odinga’s role is increasingly becoming a defining factor in the party’s trajectory. Whether she can overcome the skepticism of veteran party members and unite the diverse factions within ODM remains to be seen. Her vision for a youth-led, people-centered party has certainly made waves, and her boldness echoes the spirit of her late father, Raila.

As ODM prepares for its 2026 National Delegates Conference, where the party’s future leadership will be decided, it is clear that Winnie Odinga is positioning herself not just as a politician, but as a symbol of the next generation of leadership in Kenya’s opposition politics. The decisions made at this critical juncture will determine whether ODM remains a force in Kenya’s political landscape or becomes a party divided along generational lines.
