A Kenya visa is an official travel document that allows foreign nationals to enter Kenya legally. The visa grants permission to stay in the country for a specific period, depending on the visa type. Whether you’re visiting Kenya for tourism, business, or any other purpose, you will need a visa to enter the country unless you are from a visa-exempt country.
Kenya offers various types of visas, including single-entry, multiple-entry, and transit visas, which can be conveniently applied for online via the eVisa platform. This guide will take you through the entire process of applying for a visa to Kenya.

Step 1: Determine the Type of Visa You Need

Kenya offers several types of visas, and it’s essential to know which one suits your travel purpose. Common types of Kenyan visas include:

  • Tourist Visa: For travelers visiting Kenya for leisure or tourism.
  • Business Visa: For individuals visiting Kenya for business meetings, conferences, or events.
  • Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Kenya en route to another destination.
  • Student Visa: For students intending to study in Kenya at an accredited institution.
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: For tourists visiting Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda on a single visa.
Once you know the type of visa you need, you can proceed with the application.

Step 2: Create or Log in to Your eVisa Account

To apply for a Kenyan visa, you must use the official Kenya eVisa platform. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Go to the eVisa Portal: Visit the official eVisa website at www.evisa.go.ke.
  2. Create an Account: If you don’t already have an eVisa account, click “Create Account” to begin the registration process. You’ll need to provide your email address, name, and passport details.
  3. Log in: If you already have an account, simply log in using your credentials.

Step 3: Complete the Visa Application Form

Once you’re logged into the eVisa portal, you can proceed with the visa application:

  1. Select Visa Type: Choose the type of visa you wish to apply for, based on the purpose of your visit.
  2. Provide Personal Details: Fill in your personal information, including your full name, nationality, passport number, and the country of issuance.
  3. Travel Details: Include your planned entry date, departure date, and address in Kenya. For tourist visas, you may need to provide details of your accommodation.
  4. Upload Required Documents: Depending on the visa type, you may need to upload certain documents, such as:
    • A scanned copy of your passport (valid for at least 6 months)
    • Passport-size photograph
    • Travel itinerary (for tourist or business visas)
    • Invitation letter (for business or student visas)
    • Proof of funds (for some visa types)

Step 4: Pay the Visa Application Fee

Once you’ve completed the application, you’ll be prompted to make the payment for the visa processing fee. The cost varies depending on the type of visa you are applying for.

  1. Payment Methods: Payment can be made online via credit/debit card, M-Pesa, or bank transfer.
  2. Confirmation of Payment: After making the payment, you’ll receive a confirmation receipt with your payment details and application reference number.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

After making the payment, review all the information you’ve entered to ensure everything is accurate. Once you’re satisfied, click “Submit” to send your application to the Kenya Immigration Services for processing.

  1. Confirmation Email: You will receive an email confirming the submission of your application. This email will also contain a tracking number, which you can use to check the status of your application.

Step 6: Wait for Visa Processing

The processing time for a Kenyan visa is usually 2 to 5 business days, depending on the visa type and your nationality. You can check the status of your application using the tracking number provided in your confirmation email.

  1. Track Application: Log in to your eVisa account and check the status of your visa application.
  2. Approval or Denial: If approved, you will receive your eVisa via email. If denied, you will be notified and provided with the reasons for the denial.

Step 7: Download and Print Your eVisa

Once your visa is approved, you will receive your eVisa as a PDF attachment in your email.

  1. Download the eVisa: Save a copy of your eVisa to your device.
  2. Print Your eVisa: It is advisable to print a copy of your eVisa, as you will need to present it at the port of entry into Kenya.

Step 8: Arrive in Kenya

Upon arrival in Kenya, present your eVisa and passport to the immigration officers for verification. Ensure you have all other necessary documents, such as your return ticket and proof of accommodation.

  1. Stay Duration: Your eVisa will specify how long you are allowed to stay in Kenya. Make sure to adhere to the visa conditions to avoid overstaying.
