The Hustler Fund is a government initiative in Kenya aimed at providing affordable loans to small-scale entrepreneurs, youth, women, and vulnerable groups. The fund is designed to support the growth of small businesses and help Kenyans access capital for personal and business development. The loans are intended to help lift individuals and communities out of poverty by empowering them financially.
If you’re interested in accessing the Hustler Fund, whether for business or personal development, this guide will walk you through the application process, eligibility requirements, and key steps to get started.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before applying for the Hustler Fund, ensure that you meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Kenyan Citizen: The applicant must be a Kenyan citizen.
  • Age Requirement: While the Hustler Fund is designed for a wide range of individuals, youth and vulnerable groups are prioritized.
  • Valid Identification: You must have a valid Kenyan National ID or a KRA PIN (for tax compliance).
  • Entrepreneurial Activities: The fund is specifically designed for individuals involved in business activities. Whether you’re operating a small-scale business, offering a service, or looking to start a new venture, you must demonstrate an intention to use the funds for entrepreneurial purposes.
  • No Active Loans in Default: Applicants should not have any outstanding loans that are in default with other financial institutions.

Step 2: Access the Hustler Fund Application Portal

To apply for the Hustler Fund, you need to use the official government platforms. You can apply via mobile phones using USSD codes, as well as through the Hustler Fund Portal on eCitizen.

Option 1: Applying via USSD

  1. Dial the USSD Code: Dial *254# on your Safaricom, Airtel, or Telkom phone to access the Hustler Fund application menu.
  2. Select Application Type: Choose the type of loan you are applying for. Options typically include small business loans, personal loans, and youth support.
  3. Enter Personal Details: Provide your National ID number and any additional requested details.
  4. Submit Application: Follow the prompts to complete your application, including agreeing to terms and conditions.
  5. Receive Loan Offer: If eligible, you will receive a loan offer, including the amount and repayment terms.

Option 2: Applying through eCitizen

  1. Visit the eCitizen Portal: Go to the official eCitizen website (www.ecitizen.go.ke) using your browser.
  2. Login or Register: If you don’t already have an eCitizen account, you will need to create one. For existing users, simply log in with your credentials.
  3. Select “Hustler Fund” Service: Navigate to the “Hustler Fund” service under available government services.
  4. Fill in the Application Form: Complete the application form by providing required details such as your business information, identification number, and the loan amount you wish to request.
  5. Submit Application: After reviewing your details, submit your application for approval.

Step 3: Provide Required Documents

Depending on the type of loan you are applying for, you may need to submit additional documents. These could include:

  • National ID Number: This is used to verify your Kenyan citizenship.
  • Business Registration Certificate: If applying for a business loan, you will need to provide proof of your registered business.
  • KRA PIN: For individuals with businesses, the KRA PIN number is required to confirm your tax compliance.

Step 4: Wait for Loan Approval

Once you submit your application, the Hustler Fund will evaluate it based on the eligibility criteria. The approval process typically takes a short time. If successful, you will receive a loan offer with:

  • The Approved Loan Amount: This could be anywhere from a small amount for individuals to larger sums for business owners.
  • Repayment Terms: The loan will come with a repayment period and interest rate, which is usually lower than that of traditional banks.

Step 5: Accept the Loan Offer and Receive Funds

Once you are approved for the loan, you will receive an SMS notification or an email with the loan details. To accept the loan:

  1. Confirm Loan Offer: Accept the loan by following the instructions sent to your mobile phone or email.
  2. Receive Funds: After acceptance, the funds will be disbursed directly to your mobile wallet, and you can start using the money for your intended business or personal development purposes.

Step 6: Repay the Loan

Repaying the Hustler Fund loan is just as easy as applying for it. Here’s how:

  1. Loan Repayment Options: You can repay the loan via mobile money (MPESA), bank transfer, or through the eCitizen portal.
  2. Repayment Schedule: The loan repayment schedule will be outlined in the loan offer. Be sure to follow the agreed schedule to avoid penalties or default.
  3. Loan Balance and Updates: You can track your loan balance and make payments directly via the Hustler Fund portal or through mobile USSD.
