Google Messages is the default messaging app on many Android phones and offers several advanced features that enhance the text messaging experience. One such feature is the ability to check if your messages have been read, which is available through RCS (Rich Communication Services). This feature, similar to the read receipts in apps like WhatsApp, allows you to see when the recipient has read your message, provided certain conditions are met.

In this guide, we will walk you through how to enable RCS on Google Messages and check the read status of your messages. You will also learn what the different checkmarks mean, and how to troubleshoot if the feature isn’t working.

What Is RCS and Why Does It Matter?

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is an upgrade to SMS (Short Message Service), allowing for more advanced features such as:

  • Read receipts: See when your message has been read.
  • Typing indicators: Know when the person is typing.
  • High-quality media sharing: Send images, videos, and audio messages in higher quality.
  • End-to-end encryption: For added security when sending messages.

RCS works only if both you and the recipient are using a messaging app that supports it, like Google Messages, and if the “Send read receipts” option is enabled on both devices.

Requirements for Checking Message Read Status

Before you can see if your messages have been read, there are a few important conditions to keep in mind:

  • Both Devices Must Have RCS Enabled: Both you and the recipient must be using Google Messages as the default messaging app.
  • Internet Connection: RCS relies on the internet, so both devices must be connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Enable Read Receipts: The “Send read receipts” option must be enabled on both devices.

If these conditions are met, you’ll be able to see whether your messages have been delivered and read by the recipient.

Step-by-Step Guide to Enabling RCS and Checking Read Status

Follow these steps to enable RCS on Google Messages and start seeing when your messages have been read.

Step 1: Connect Your Device to the Internet

Before using RCS features like read receipts, ensure that both your device and the recipient’s device are connected to the internet. This can be either via Wi-Fi or mobile data. Without an internet connection, RCS won’t function.

Step 2: Open Google Messages

If Google Messages isn’t already installed on your device, download it from the Google Play Store. Once installed, open the app by tapping on its icon.

Step 3: Access Google Messages Settings

To enable RCS and check the read receipt settings:

  1. Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen. This will open the settings menu.
  2. Select Messages settings from the list.

Step 4: Enable RCS Chats

Once you’re in the settings menu:

  1. Tap on General to access the general settings.
  2. Select RCS chats to access the settings related to RCS features.

Step 5: Turn on RCS and Read Receipts

In the RCS chats section:

  1. Toggle the option Turn on RCS chats to enable RCS messaging on your device. If RCS is already enabled, this will show as Connected.
  2. Toggle the Send read receipts option to allow you to see when your messages have been read by the recipient.

When RCS is activated and the Send read receipts option is turned on, you’ll start seeing read receipts on your sent messages. The app will display checkmarks to indicate delivery and read status.

Step 6: Ensure RCS Status is Connected

Once you’ve enabled RCS, check that the status shows Connected under the RCS section. This confirms that RCS is working properly on your device.

Understanding the Checkmarks in Google Messages

Once you’ve enabled RCS and started sending messages, you’ll notice different checkmarks appearing next to your sent messages. Here’s what they mean:

  • One Gray Checkmark: The message has been sent to the recipient’s phone, but they haven’t received it yet.
  • Two Gray Checkmarks: The message has been delivered to the recipient’s device, but they haven’t read it yet.
  • Two Blue Checkmarks: The recipient has read your message.

These checkmarks make it easy to see when your message has been read, without needing to wait for a reply.

Troubleshooting: Why Might Read Receipts Not Work?

If you’ve enabled RCS and read receipts but aren’t seeing the expected results, there could be a few reasons why:

1. The Recipient Isn’t Using Google Messages

If the person you’re texting isn’t using Google Messages or hasn’t enabled RCS, you won’t see read receipts. Only RCS-compatible apps (like Google Messages) support this feature.

2. RCS Is Not Enabled on the Recipient’s Device

Even if you have RCS enabled, the recipient must also have RCS activated on their device to send and receive read receipts. Ask the recipient to enable RCS and the “Send read receipts” feature in their Google Messages app.

3. No Internet Connection

For RCS to work, both devices must be connected to the internet. If either device is offline or the internet connection is weak, RCS will not function properly.

4. Outdated Google Messages App

Ensure both you and the recipient have the latest version of Google Messages. An outdated app can cause issues with RCS features, including read receipts.

5. Blocked or Restricted Numbers

If you’ve blocked the recipient, or they’ve blocked you, RCS features won’t work. Check your block list in Google Messages and make sure the recipient is not blocked.
