WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps worldwide, offers a convenient way to see if your messages have been read. This feature, known as read receipts, lets you know whether the recipient has received and read your message. However, WhatsApp’s read receipt system works a bit differently compared to other messaging apps, like Samsung Messages or Google Messages.
In this guide, we will walk you through how WhatsApp’s read receipt feature works, how to enable it, and how you can check when someone has read your message.
How Does WhatsApp’s Read Receipt Work?
WhatsApp uses a series of ticks (checkmarks) to indicate the status of your sent messages:
- One Gray Tick: The message has been sent to WhatsApp’s servers but has not yet been delivered to the recipient’s device.
- Two Gray Ticks: The message has been delivered to the recipient’s device, but they have not read it yet.
- Two Blue Ticks: The recipient has read your message. The two ticks will turn blue once the message has been opened and read by the recipient.
For the blue ticks to appear, both you and the recipient must have read receipts enabled in your WhatsApp settings. If either party has disabled the read receipt feature, you won’t see the blue ticks, even if the message has been read.
How to Enable Read Receipts on WhatsApp
If you’re not seeing blue ticks next to your messages, it’s possible that read receipts are turned off. Follow these steps to enable read receipts on WhatsApp:
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on Your Samsung Device
Start by opening the WhatsApp app on your Samsung Galaxy device.
Step 2: Tap the Three Vertical Dots in the Upper-Right Corner
In the top-right corner of the screen, tap the three vertical dots to open the options menu.
Step 3: Select “Settings”
From the menu, tap Settings to open the WhatsApp settings page.
Step 4: Go to “Privacy”
In the Settings menu, select Privacy to access all privacy-related options, including read receipts.
Step 5: Toggle on “Read Receipts”
In the Privacy section, scroll down and find the option labeled Read receipts. Toggle the switch to turn it on. This will allow you to see when your messages have been read by the recipient.
Once read receipts are enabled, you will start seeing blue ticks when the recipient has read your message, as long as the recipient has also enabled the feature on their device.
How to Check When Someone Has Read Your Message
If you’re not sure when someone read your message, WhatsApp offers an easy way to check the message info, which shows you the exact time the recipient read your message.
Here’s how to check when your message was read:
Step 1: Tap and Hold the Message for 2-3 Seconds
In your chat, find the message you want to check. Tap and hold the message for 2-3 seconds to select it.
Step 2: Click the Three Vertical Dots in the Top-Right Corner
After selecting the message, tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the screen.
Step 3: Select “Info” from the Dropdown Options
From the dropdown menu, select Info. This will show you detailed information about the message, including:
- Time delivered: When the message was delivered to the recipient’s device.
- Time read: When the recipient actually opened and read the message.
If you see the “Time read” information, it means that read receipts are enabled, and the recipient has read your message.
What to Do if You Don’t See Blue Ticks
If you don’t see blue ticks after the message has been delivered, it’s likely because either:
- The recipient has disabled read receipts: If the recipient has turned off the Read receipts feature, you won’t be able to see if they have read your message. In this case, you’ll only see two gray ticks when the message is delivered.
- You’ve disabled read receipts: If you have disabled read receipts on your own WhatsApp, you won’t be able to see the blue ticks either, even when the recipient has read your message.
To check or enable read receipts for yourself, follow the steps outlined earlier in this guide.
Additional Information About WhatsApp’s Read Receipts
- Group Chats: In group chats, the blue ticks will turn blue when all group members have read the message.
- Status Updates: You can also see who has viewed your WhatsApp Status by checking the “Viewers” list, which shows who has seen your updates.
- Privacy: While read receipts provide useful information, they also come with privacy implications. Some people prefer to keep their read status private, so WhatsApp allows users to disable read receipts if they wish.
