Modern smartphones rely heavily on location services. Whether it is navigation apps guiding you to your destination, weather apps providing forecasts based on your region, or social media platforms tagging your location automatically, location data plays a major role in how many mobile apps function. Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad come with built-in location tracking features designed to improve user experience and provide useful services.
However, not every user is comfortable with their device constantly sharing its location. There are situations where you may want to limit or completely disable location tracking. Some people prefer stronger privacy protection, while others simply want to prevent certain apps from accessing their location data.
Fortunately, Apple provides several options that allow users to control how location services operate on their devices. You can limit which apps have access to your location, disable location services completely, or turn off device tracking features such as Find My iPhone.
Although this guide focuses mainly on iPhone settings, the same instructions apply almost identically to iPads running iPadOS.
Understanding Location Services on Apple Devices
Location Services is a feature built into iOS and iPadOS that allows apps and system services to determine the physical location of your device. The system calculates your position using a combination of GPS signals, Bluetooth connections, Wi-Fi networks, and cellular towers.
When enabled, apps can request permission to access this information. For example, ride-hailing services need your location to match you with nearby drivers, and map applications use location data to provide navigation instructions.
Apple designed its operating system to give users control over these permissions. When an app requests access to your location, you can decide whether to allow it, deny it, or limit the circumstances under which it can access that information.
Even so, many users approve these requests without reviewing them later. Over time, dozens of apps may accumulate permission to track location data, sometimes unnecessarily.
Reviewing and adjusting these permissions is one of the easiest ways to improve your device privacy.
Managing Location Access for Individual Apps
If you want to keep location services active but restrict which apps can use them, the best option is to manage permissions individually.
Start by opening the Settings app on your device. From there, navigate to Privacy & Security and select Location Services. If location tracking is enabled, you will see a list of installed apps that have requested access to your device’s location.
Each application will display its current permission level. Tapping on any app opens a menu where you can choose how it may use location information.
Apple typically provides several options:
Never
This setting prevents the app from accessing your location entirely.
Ask Next Time or When I Share
With this option, the app must request permission each time it tries to access your location.
While Using the App
The application can access your location only when it is open and actively being used.
Always
This option allows the app to access location information even when it runs in the background.
Some apps may present fewer options depending on how they function. For example, certain apps may only allow “While Using the App” or “Never.”
Adjusting these permissions allows you to maintain useful features while minimizing unnecessary tracking.
Turning Off Location Services Completely
For users who want maximum privacy, it is possible to disable location services entirely.
This prevents all apps and system services from accessing the device’s location data.
To turn off the feature, open Settings and navigate to Privacy & Security. Next, select Location Services at the top of the menu. You will see a toggle switch indicating whether location tracking is active.
Moving the switch to the off position disables the feature for the entire device.
Once location services are turned off, applications that rely on location data may stop working correctly. Navigation apps, weather services, and local recommendations may lose functionality because they cannot determine your location.
Another important effect is that Apple’s Find My feature will also stop working when location services are disabled.
Understanding the Find My Feature
Find My is one of Apple’s most powerful device recovery tools. It allows users to track their Apple devices from another device or through the iCloud website.
With Find My enabled, you can locate your iPhone or iPad on a map, play a sound to help locate it nearby, or remotely erase the device if it is lost or stolen.
This feature provides significant security benefits. However, because it constantly monitors device location, some users prefer to disable it when privacy is their top concern.
Steps to Disable Find My iPhone
Turning off Find My is a straightforward process.
Open the Settings app and tap your Apple ID profile at the top of the screen. This opens the account settings menu where you manage iCloud and device features.
Next, select Find My from the available options.
Inside the Find My settings page, locate the Find My iPhone toggle switch. Turning the switch off disables the tracking feature. The system will ask you to confirm the action by entering your Apple ID password.
Once the password is entered, the feature will be disabled and the device will no longer appear in the Find My tracking system.
Understanding the Find My Network
Apple introduced an expanded tracking system called the Find My Network. This feature allows nearby Apple devices to help locate lost devices even when they are not connected to the internet.
For example, if your iPhone is lost but another Apple device passes nearby, that device can anonymously relay its location to Apple’s network.
While this system improves the chances of recovering lost devices, it also means that location signals may continue even under certain conditions.
When an iPhone Can Still Be Tracked
Many users assume that turning on Airplane Mode stops all location tracking. In reality, some tracking features can still operate in limited ways.
Since the release of iOS 15, certain iPhone models can continue transmitting location information even after the device appears to be powered off.
This feature applies to iPhone 11 models and newer devices when the Find My Network is enabled. The system allows the phone to broadcast its location so it can still be located if lost.
For users concerned about this capability, disabling the Find My Network is necessary.
How to Turn Off the Find My Network
Disabling the Find My Network requires navigating to the same settings area used to control Find My iPhone.
Open the Settings app and select your Apple ID profile. Tap Find My and then locate the Find My Network option.
Switching this feature off prevents your device from broadcasting its location through Apple’s crowd-sourced tracking network.
With this feature disabled, the device will no longer send location signals after it is powered down.
