If your Mac suddenly starts behaving strangely — fans running loudly, battery not charging, random shutdowns, or display brightness not adjusting properly — the issue may not be software-related at all. Instead, it could be tied to a deeper hardware-level controller known as the System Management Controller, or SMC.

Resetting the SMC is one of the most effective troubleshooting steps for resolving power, battery, thermal, and certain hardware-related issues on Intel-based Macs. This guide explains what the SMC does, when you should reset it, and how to reset it properly depending on your Mac model.

What Is the SMC on a Mac?

SMC stands for System Management Controller. It is a low-level hardware chip found in Intel-based Macs that controls various physical and power-related functions.

The SMC manages:

  • Power management and startup behavior
  • Battery charging and discharging
  • Thermal management and fan speed
  • LED indicators and keyboard backlighting
  • Display brightness adjustments
  • Sleep and wake functionality
  • GPU switching and video modes

Essentially, the SMC handles many of the background hardware operations that keep your Mac running smoothly.

It is important to note that Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, and newer) do not use an SMC in the same way. The SMC reset process applies primarily to Intel-based Macs.

When Should You Reset the SMC?

Resetting the SMC is recommended when your Mac experiences hardware-related issues that are not resolved through standard troubleshooting methods like restarting or resetting PRAM/NVRAM.

Below are common situations where an SMC reset can help.

1. Fan and Thermal Issues

If your Mac’s fans:

  • Run at high speed constantly
  • Run loudly even when CPU usage is low
  • Fail to operate properly

An SMC reset can recalibrate thermal management and restore normal fan behavior.

2. Battery and Power Problems

Resetting the SMC may resolve issues such as:

  • Mac not turning on
  • Random shutdowns or reboots
  • Battery not charging
  • Battery draining unusually fast
  • Incorrect battery status indicators

Since the SMC directly controls power management, resetting it can restore proper battery behavior.

3. Sleep and Wake Malfunctions

If your Mac:

  • Does not go to sleep automatically
  • Does not wake from sleep
  • Shows unusual behavior during sleep cycles

An SMC reset can often fix these irregularities.

4. Keyboard and Display Backlight Issues

The SMC also manages lighting systems. Resetting it may fix:

  • Keyboard backlight not working
  • Display brightness not adjusting automatically
  • Battery indicator lights malfunctioning

5. External Display and Video Issues

If you experience:

  • External monitor connection problems
  • Display flickering
  • GPU switching issues

Resetting the SMC can help restore proper video behavior.

6. Other Hardware-Related Irregularities

An SMC reset may also resolve:

  • USB port malfunctions
  • Bluetooth connectivity issues
  • System sluggishness unrelated to CPU usage

If your Mac is acting abnormally and standard fixes do not work, resetting the SMC is often a reliable next step.

Important Things to Know Before Resetting the SMC

Before proceeding, keep in mind:

  • Resetting the SMC will restore certain hardware settings to default.
  • Power-related settings such as sleep timing may revert to original configurations.
  • The first boot after resetting may take slightly longer than usual.

These changes are normal and expected.

How to Reset the SMC on a MacBook with a Non-Removable Battery

Most modern MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models have non-removable batteries. The reset procedure for these devices is as follows.

Steps for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

  1. Shut down your Mac completely.
  2. Connect the power adapter.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the following keys simultaneously:
Shift + Control + Option (on the left side of the keyboard)
  4. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button.
  5. Keep all keys pressed for about 10 seconds.
  6. Release all keys at the same time.
  7. Press the Power button again to turn on your Mac.

If your Mac uses a MagSafe adapter, you may notice the light briefly change color during the reset process. This indicates that the SMC reset was successful.

How to Reset the SMC on Desktop Macs (iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro)

For non-portable Macs, the reset process is slightly different.

Steps for iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the device.
  3. Wait 15 seconds.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 5 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button.
  6. Reconnect the power cable.
  7. Turn on your Mac normally.

This procedure resets the SMC settings for desktop models.

How to Reset the SMC on Older MacBooks with Removable Batteries

Older MacBook and MacBook Pro models with removable batteries follow a different process.

Steps for MacBooks with Detachable Batteries

  1. Shut down the MacBook.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Disconnect the power adapter.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button.
  6. Reinsert the battery.
  7. Reconnect the power adapter.
  8. Turn on the MacBook normally.

After restarting, the SMC should be successfully reset.

After Resetting the SMC

Once your Mac boots up:

  • Check if the issue has been resolved.
  • Reconfigure any customized power settings.
  • Observe fan behavior and battery performance.

In many cases, problems related to hardware management resolve immediately after an SMC reset.

Resetting the SMC is a safe and effective troubleshooting step for Intel-based Macs experiencing hardware or power-related issues. Because it directly affects how your Mac manages energy, cooling, and system-level controls, it can resolve a wide range of performance anomalies without requiring advanced technical intervention.
