Scheduled System Upgrade on Fuliza Platform
Safaricom has announced a planned maintenance exercise on the Fuliza overdraft platform scheduled for Monday, 17th November, from 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM. The company explained that the upgrade is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance system reliability, improve customer experience and strengthen the resilience of its mobile money ecosystem. Although the maintenance window is short, Safaricom cautioned customers that Fuliza may operate on and off during the one-hour period. However, all other M-PESA services, including sending money, receiving funds, Lipa na M-PESA and withdrawals, will continue to function normally.
Why the Fuliza Upgrade Is Necessary
Fuliza has grown into one of Kenya’s most heavily used financial tools, with millions of daily transactions supporting households and businesses. As the number of users increases, the system requires periodic upgrades to handle rising transaction volumes, improve processing speeds and reduce service interruptions. Maintenance exercises also allow Safaricom to strengthen security layers, update software components and enhance the stability of the platform. Continuous upgrades ensure that the overdraft service can support future demand as digital payments expand nationwide.
How the Maintenance Will Affect Fuliza Users
During the one-hour window, customers may experience interruptions when attempting to access their Fuliza limits or complete overdraft transactions. Some requests may go through, while others might fail temporarily as the system undergoes adjustments. Safaricom scheduled the upgrade at night to minimize inconvenience for users, as transaction volumes remain significantly lower during early morning hours. Once the update is complete, normal service levels are expected to resume immediately. Users are advised to plan their transactions earlier to avoid delays.
M-PESA Services Remain Fully Operational
Despite the temporary instability on Fuliza, Safaricom has reassured customers that all other M-PESA services will operate normally. This includes transfers, Pochi la Biashara payments, Till and Paybill transactions, bank-to-M-PESA transfers and ATM withdrawals. By isolating the maintenance to Fuliza alone, the company ensures that Kenya’s broader mobile money ecosystem remains stable. Because M-PESA supports millions of financial activities every day, consistency across the rest of the platform remains a top priority for the operator.
The Growing Importance of Fuliza in Kenya’s Economy
The Fuliza overdraft facility has become a lifeline for many Kenyans, helping users complete urgent payments when they have insufficient funds. It supports daily activities such as transport payments, school fees, utility bills and small business transactions. Due to the high penetration of mobile money in the country, Fuliza plays a significant role in strengthening financial resilience for low-income and middle-income households. Its reliability is therefore essential for the smooth functioning of everyday economic activity.
Safaricom’s Broader System Upgrade Strategy
This maintenance forms part of an ongoing strategy by Safaricom to modernise its digital infrastructure. The company regularly upgrades M-PESA platforms to reduce congestion, support real-time processing and accommodate new services that rely on digital payments. The growing adoption of e-commerce, mobile lending and cashless public transport systems has increased pressure on financial technology networks. Because of these trends, Safaricom invests heavily in system capacity upgrades to ensure consistent performance across all its digital products.
Commitment to Customer Protection and Data Security
Safaricom emphasises that system upgrades are vital for strengthening cybersecurity. As digital payments expand, threats targeting financial platforms also grow. Maintenance windows allow Safaricom’s technical teams to install patches, update protocols and improve detection capabilities. These updates reinforce the protection of customer data and enhance reliability across all M-PESA touchpoints. Because users depend on mobile money for essential services, maintaining a secure environment remains one of the company’s core responsibilities.
What Customers Should Do in Preparation
Safaricom encourages users to complete any urgent Fuliza transactions before the maintenance period begins. Customers who rely on Fuliza to make early morning payments or transport-related transactions are advised to plan accordingly. During the maintenance hour, users may attempt transactions, but some may fail. Safaricom will communicate further if any unexpected delays arise. Once the exercise ends at 2:00 AM, normal service levels are expected to resume without further impact.
Growing Demand for Reliable Digital Financial Systems
Kenya’s digital finance ecosystem continues to expand at a rapid pace. Mobile lending, merchant payments and cross-platform integrations have pushed fintech infrastructure to evolve. Because millions of people depend on these systems every hour, financial institutions and mobile operators face increasing pressure to deliver uninterrupted service. Planned maintenance periods like this one ensure long-term reliability and help prevent larger system failures that could disrupt national economic activity. Safaricom’s upgrade is therefore part of broader efforts to prepare for future financial innovations.
Outlook After the Upgrade
Once the maintenance concludes, users can expect smoother performance on the Fuliza platform. Faster processing, improved stability and enhanced system capacity will support both personal and business transactions. As digital financial services continue expanding across East Africa, Safaricom is expected to introduce additional enhancements and more sophisticated tools. Through continued upgrades, the company aims to maintain its leadership in mobile financial services while supporting Kenya’s shift toward a fully digital economy.
