The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ were among the most impressive Android devices of their time. With sleek Infinity Displays measuring 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches respectively, powerful processors, and refined software, they quickly became favorites in 2017. Samsung equipped both models with 4GB of RAM, which at the time was more than enough for multitasking, gaming, and everyday use.

Under the hood, the Galaxy S8 lineup runs on either the Exynos 8895 or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 depending on the region. Both chipsets deliver strong performance, though some benchmarks suggested the Snapdragon variant had a slight edge in certain scenarios.

Even with capable hardware, smartphones can slow down over time due to background apps, cached files, storage clutter, and battery settings. Fortunately, Samsung introduced a powerful built-in tool called Device Maintenance to help users optimize performance and clean RAM without installing third-party apps.

If your Galaxy S8 feels slower than usual, here is a detailed guide to improving speed and overall performance.

Understanding Device Maintenance

Device Maintenance is a dedicated section in the Settings menu that helps you manage:

  • Battery usage
  • Performance modes
  • Storage cleanup
  • RAM management
  • Device security

Instead of manually hunting for system tweaks, Samsung consolidated performance tools into one dashboard.

To access it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Device Maintenance.

You will see a summary screen displaying battery, performance, storage, memory, and security status.

Use the Optimize Button First

At the top of the Device Maintenance screen, there is an Optimize button. This feature automatically:

  • Closes unnecessary background apps
  • Clears cached and temporary files
  • Frees up RAM
  • Detects system issues

Tap Optimize and wait a few seconds. This is the fastest way to refresh your Galaxy S8 performance without diving into deeper settings.

Using this regularly helps maintain smooth performance.

Clean RAM for Better Speed

The Memory section inside Device Maintenance focuses on RAM management.

When too many apps run in the background, they consume RAM, which can cause lag. To clean RAM:

  1. Open Device Maintenance.
  2. Tap Memory.
  3. Review the list of active background apps.
  4. Tap Clean Now.

This action closes unnecessary apps and frees memory instantly. However, avoid force-closing essential system apps, as Android is designed to manage memory intelligently.

Cleaning RAM is especially useful before gaming or running heavy applications.

Adjust Performance Modes

Samsung provides performance profiles that balance speed and battery life.

Go to:

Settings > Device Maintenance > Performance Mode

You will find options such as:

  • Optimized
  • Game
  • Entertainment
  • High Performance

Optimized Mode

This is the recommended setting for everyday use. It balances power efficiency and performance.

Game Mode

Ideal for high-graphics games. It boosts CPU and GPU performance for smoother gameplay. Keep in mind that this consumes more battery and generates more heat.

High Performance Mode

Increases screen brightness and resolution while improving responsiveness. This is useful for demanding tasks but drains battery faster.

Switching to the appropriate mode based on usage can noticeably improve speed.

Adjust Screen Resolution

The Galaxy S8 ships with Full HD+ resolution by default, even though it supports Quad HD+.

To change resolution:

Settings > Display > Screen Resolution

Increasing to QHD+ improves visual clarity but requires more processing power and battery. If your focus is performance and battery efficiency, keeping it at FHD+ is ideal.

Lower resolution reduces GPU workload and can slightly improve responsiveness.

Manage Battery Settings for Performance

Battery optimization also affects performance.

Inside Device Maintenance:

  1. Tap Battery.
  2. Check which apps consume the most power.
  3. Restrict background activity for rarely used apps.

You can enable Medium Power Saving or Maximum Power Saving when needed. However, these modes limit performance to extend battery life.

For maximum speed, avoid aggressive power-saving settings.

Clean Storage to Improve Responsiveness

Storage clutter slows down devices over time.

In Device Maintenance:

  1. Tap Storage.
  2. Let the system scan for junk files.
  3. Review duplicate files, cached data, and temporary files.
  4. Tap Clean Now.

Removing unnecessary files frees internal storage space and helps the system run more efficiently.

Avoid filling your storage completely. Keeping at least 20 percent free space improves system performance.

Use Device Security for System Health

Security threats can impact performance. The Galaxy S8 includes built-in protection powered by Intel Security.

To scan your device:

  1. Open Device Maintenance.
  2. Tap Device Security.
  3. Activate and run a scan.

Regular scans help detect malware or suspicious files that may affect speed or stability.

Disable Unused Apps

Pre-installed apps that you never use can consume background resources.

To disable apps:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select an unused app.
  4. Tap Disable if available.

Disabling unnecessary apps reduces background activity and frees system resources.

Reduce Animations for a Faster Feel

Reducing animation speed can make your Galaxy S8 feel snappier.

Enable Developer Options:

  1. Go to Settings > About Phone.
  2. Tap Build Number seven times.

Then:

  1. Open Developer Options.
  2. Reduce Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale, and Animator Duration Scale to 0.5x.

This does not increase hardware speed but improves perceived responsiveness.

Keep Software Updated

Software updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes.

Go to:

Settings > Software Update > Download Updates Manually

Keeping your Galaxy S8 updated ensures optimal system efficiency.

Restart Regularly

A simple restart clears temporary processes and refreshes system memory.

Restart your phone at least once every few days to maintain smooth performance.

The Galaxy S8 remains a capable smartphone when properly maintained. With built-in tools like Device Maintenance, performance tuning and RAM cleaning are straightforward. By managing battery profiles, clearing storage clutter, optimizing RAM usage, and adjusting performance settings, you can keep your device running smoothly long after its initial setup.
