Want a New Snapchat Name? Here’s the Only Way to Change It

Snapchat remains one of the most popular social platforms among teenagers and young adults. From streaks to Snap scores, the app has built a culture around engagement and digital reputation. For many users, their username becomes part of their identity. However, what happens when you outgrow that old nickname or choose something you no longer like?

Unlike many other social media platforms, Snapchat does not allow users to directly edit or change their username once the account has been created. This restriction often surprises people who assume it can be updated from the settings menu. If you want a completely new username, the only workaround involves creating a brand-new account.

Before moving forward, it is important to understand one key detail: changing your Snapchat username through this method means starting over. Your Snap score, streaks, memories not backed up, and account history will not transfer automatically. If you are comfortable with that trade-off, here is the full process explained step by step.

Why Snapchat Doesn’t Allow Direct Username Changes

Snapchat treats usernames as permanent identifiers tied to the account’s backend system. While you can change your display name at any time, your actual username remains fixed.

Your display name is what friends see when they search or view your profile. However, your username is used for login and unique identification across the platform.

Because of this structure, Snapchat does not provide a simple rename button.

Important Things to Know Before You Start

Before creating a new account, consider the following:

  • You will lose your Snap score.
  • Existing streaks will disappear.
  • Friends will not automatically transfer.
  • Saved chats may not carry over.
  • Any unbacked memories may be lost.

If your Snap score or streaks matter to you, think carefully before proceeding. There is no official way to transfer data between accounts.

Step 1: Log Out of Your Current Account

To begin the process:

  1. Open Snapchat on your device.
  2. Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.
  4. Scroll down and select Log Out.
  5. Confirm your decision.

You are now signed out of your existing account.

Step 2: Create a New Account with Your Desired Username

Now you will create a new account using the username you want.

  1. Tap Sign Up on the login screen.
  2. Enter your name and date of birth.
  3. Choose your preferred username.
  4. Enter a password.
  5. Use a different email address from your old account.

Using a different email address is important because Snapchat does not allow two accounts with the same email at the same time. You can update the email later if needed.

Complete the verification process and confirm your phone number if required.

You now have a new Snapchat account with your desired username.

Step 3: Reconnect with Your Friends

After signing up, your friend list will be empty. To reconnect:

  1. Tap your profile icon.
  2. Select Add Friends.
  3. Tap Add from Contacts.
  4. Allow Snapchat to access your contacts.

This will show people in your phone contacts who are already on Snapchat. You can quickly re-add many friends this way.

However, not all friends may appear if their numbers are not saved in your contacts.

Step 4: Manually Add Remaining Friends

To recover the rest of your connections:

  1. Log back into your old account.
  2. Open your profile.
  3. Tap My Friends.
  4. Write down or screenshot usernames of friends not already added to your new account.

Then:

  1. Log out of the old account.
  2. Log back into your new account.
  3. Use the search function to manually add those usernames.

This step ensures you rebuild your network completely.

Step 5: Inform Others About Your New Username

Even after re-adding friends, some people may not realize you have switched accounts. To avoid confusion:

  • Post your new username on Instagram or other social media.
  • Send a snap from your old account announcing the change.
  • Update your bio on other platforms.

This makes the transition smoother.

Step 6: Decide Whether to Delete the Old Account

If you no longer want the old username associated with you, you may choose to delete that account.

To delete:

  1. Log into your old Snapchat account.
  2. Visit Snapchat’s account deletion page.
  3. Confirm your credentials.
  4. Follow the deletion steps.

Once deleted, the account enters a deactivation period before permanent removal. After that, all data associated with the old account is permanently erased.

Be certain before deleting, as this action cannot be reversed once completed.

Alternative: Change Display Name Instead

If your goal is simply to appear differently to friends, you may not need a new account.

To change your display name:

  1. Open your profile.
  2. Tap your current name.
  3. Edit the display name.
  4. Save changes.

This updates how your name appears to others without affecting your username, Snap score, or streaks.

For many users, this simpler option solves the problem.

Why Many Users Hesitate to Change Usernames

Snapchat’s gamified system, including Snap scores and streaks, creates emotional attachment. Starting fresh can feel discouraging. That is why many users prefer adjusting their display name rather than creating a new account.

Still, if branding, privacy, or personal reasons require a complete change, creating a new account remains the only reliable solution.

Switching usernames on Snapchat requires planning and patience. Since there is no built-in rename feature, users must recreate their account and rebuild connections manually. While it takes effort, following the steps carefully ensures a smoother transition to your new Snapchat identity.
