The Smart Driving License (Smart DL) is a digitalized version of the traditional driving license issued by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in Kenya. It replaces the paper-based license and includes advanced security features like a smart chip for verification. Every driver in Kenya is required to renew the Smart DL every three years. Online renewal via the eCitizen platform offers convenience, eliminating the need for long visits to NTSA offices.

Step 1: Ensure Your Eligibility for Renewal

Before starting your Smart DL renewal, confirm that you meet these criteria:

  • Existing Driving License: Your current Smart DL should be close to expiry or already expired.
  • Valid Identification: You need a Kenyan National ID or Passport (for foreign nationals).
  • No Pending Fines: Any outstanding penalties could delay your renewal.
  • Updated Personal Details: Ensure your address and contact information are current in NTSA records.

Step 2: Access the eCitizen Portal

All Smart DL renewals are processed through eCitizen.
Visit www.ecitizen.go.ke and log in with your account. If you don’t have an account, create one using your ID number, email, and phone number. A verified account is necessary to access the renewal service.

Step 3: Select the Driving License Renewal Service

Navigate to “Transport and Licensing Services” and select “Renew Driving License”. This opens the online application form specifically for Smart DL renewal.

Step 4: Complete the Renewal Application

Check that your personal details are correct, including your National ID number and current driving license number. Upload scanned copies of the following:

  • National ID or Passport
  • Current Smart DL
  • Recent Passport-size Photo
Payment of the renewal fee, typically KSh 600, can be made using M-Pesa, credit/debit cards, or bank transfers. After completing these steps, review your application carefully before submitting.

Step 5: Receive Confirmation and Tracking Number

Upon submission, eCitizen will send a payment confirmation via SMS or email. You will also get a tracking number to monitor the progress of your application on the portal.

Step 6: Wait for Your Smart DL to Be Processed

NTSA will process your application after submission. Processing usually takes 2 to 5 business days, though timing can vary depending on demand. Use your tracking number to check updates directly on eCitizen.

Step 7: Collect Your Renewed Smart DL

Once the renewal is complete, notifications are sent via SMS or email. You can choose to pick up your Smart DL at an NTSA office near you, or, where available, have it delivered to your address.
