Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have confirmed that star full-back Achraf Hakimi has suffered a severe ankle sprain, ruling him out for an estimated six to eight weeks. The club released an official statement revealing that the Moroccan international avoided a fracture but will still require an extended recovery period. The news comes as a major blow to PSG and to Morocco’s national team, with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on the horizon.

Hakimi sustained the injury during PSG’s most recent Ligue 1 fixture after a collision in the second half. He was immediately substituted and taken for medical evaluation, where scans ruled out a fracture but confirmed serious ligament damage around his right ankle. PSG’s medical department has placed him on an intensive rehabilitation program aimed at restoring stability and strength ahead of his eventual return to full training.

PSG’s Official Statement

The club’s statement read: “Following medical tests, Achraf Hakimi has been diagnosed with a severe ankle sprain. He has avoided any fracture but will remain unavailable for approximately six to eight weeks. The player has started rehabilitation under the supervision of the medical staff.”
This announcement brings relief that the injury is not season-ending but also raises concerns over his fitness for upcoming fixtures and international duties. Hakimi’s absence leaves PSG short of natural right-backs during a busy schedule that includes Champions League matches and domestic cup competitions.

The Incident and Immediate Reactions

The injury occurred late in the second half after Hakimi twisted his ankle awkwardly while contesting a loose ball. Despite initial attempts to continue playing, he signaled to the bench shortly afterward. The medical staff rushed to his aid, and his visible discomfort prompted immediate substitution.
Teammates and fans at the Parc des Princes applauded as Hakimi left the pitch. Manager Luis Enrique later confirmed in a post-match interview that the injury “looked serious” and that the club would take no risks with the player’s recovery.

Impact on PSG’s Tactical Setup

Hakimi’s injury presents a significant tactical challenge for Luis Enrique, who has relied heavily on the Moroccan’s pace, creativity, and defensive intelligence. As one of PSG’s most versatile players, Hakimi’s ability to attack from deep, overlap wingers, and deliver precise crosses is central to the team’s system.
His absence forces Enrique to explore alternative options. Nordi Mukiele, who has been used sparingly this season, is the likely replacement at right-back. The coach could also shift Marquinhos or Danilo Pereira into defensive cover roles, though such adjustments would alter the team’s rhythm. In Hakimi’s absence, PSG may adopt a more compact defensive approach, reducing overlapping runs to maintain balance.

Season Performance Before Injury

Before the injury, Hakimi had been enjoying one of his most consistent spells since joining PSG in 2021. He had contributed several assists and goals in both domestic and European competitions, earning praise for his tactical maturity and work rate. His partnership with Kylian Mbappé on the right flank has been particularly effective, providing width and attacking unpredictability.
Hakimi’s performances have also drawn admiration for his improved defensive discipline under Luis Enrique, who has emphasized controlled pressing and structured transitions. Losing him at this point in the campaign could disrupt PSG’s momentum, especially in high-stakes matches.

Medical Outlook and Recovery Timeline

According to medical experts familiar with similar injuries, a severe ankle sprain can take between six and eight weeks to heal, depending on ligament damage and rehabilitation response. PSG’s medical team will focus on reducing swelling, restoring joint stability, and gradually reintroducing weight-bearing exercises.
While surgery is not required, Hakimi’s recovery plan includes physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and strength conditioning. If all goes well, he could return to training by late January, though PSG will not rush his comeback to avoid setbacks.

AFCON Implications for Morocco

Hakimi’s injury also poses a major concern for the Moroccan national team, who are preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations in early 2026. As one of Morocco’s key players, his absence would be a significant blow to their campaign. National team coach Walid Regragui has been in close contact with PSG’s medical staff and is monitoring Hakimi’s progress carefully.
If his recovery timeline extends to the full eight weeks, Hakimi’s availability for the AFCON group stages could be in doubt. However, his participation in the later stages remains possible if his rehabilitation progresses smoothly. Regragui has previously described Hakimi as “indispensable,” both for his leadership and his explosive performances at right-back.

Fan and Player Reactions

PSG players and supporters quickly rallied around Hakimi after the announcement. Messages of support flooded social media, with teammate Kylian Mbappé posting, “Stay strong, brother, we’ll be waiting for you.” Fellow PSG defender Marquinhos echoed the sentiment, emphasizing Hakimi’s importance on and off the pitch.
Moroccan fans also expressed hope for a swift recovery, recalling his standout performances during the 2022 World Cup, where he played a crucial role in Morocco’s historic semifinal run. The injury, though unfortunate, has also highlighted his growing influence as both a club and national team leader.

The Road to Recovery

PSG’s focus now shifts to maintaining stability in Hakimi’s absence. Luis Enrique is expected to rotate his backline and integrate younger talents to ensure defensive continuity. The club’s sports science department has a strong track record of managing player rehabilitation, and Hakimi is known for his professionalism and discipline, both of which will aid his recovery.
His return will likely come in phases—starting with light training, followed by controlled match participation. The medical team will only clear him for competitive action once he demonstrates full mobility and stability in the affected ankle.

PSG’s Long-Term Perspective

While Hakimi’s injury is a setback, PSG remain optimistic about his recovery and long-term contribution. His athleticism, leadership, and tactical versatility make him one of the team’s most valuable assets. The club views this as a temporary hurdle in a long season filled with opportunities.
The coaching staff has reiterated that the team’s depth and experience can compensate for his absence, but no replacement can fully replicate his unique skill set. For now, the focus will be on ensuring a full and safe recovery before he returns to action for both PSG and Morocco.
