In 2025, Saudi Arabia celebrated a groundbreaking achievement as its life expectancy rose to 79.7 years, a significant leap from 74 years in 2016. This remarkable increase in life expectancy places the Kingdom among the leaders globally in health outcomes over the past decade. Health Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel revealed this milestone during the 2026 Budget Forum in Riyadh, underscoring how the success was driven by the government’s strategic healthcare investments under the Vision 2030 framework.

The rise in life expectancy is one of the clearest indicators of the transformative progress Saudi Arabia has made in its healthcare sector, a central pillar of Vision 2030. The country’s ambitious plan to diversify its economy, improve public services, and enhance the overall quality of life for its citizens has resulted in tangible benefits, particularly in the area of health. Minister Al-Jalajel’s remarks at the forum emphasized that the increased life expectancy was not only an outcome of enhanced healthcare access but also a direct reflection of the Kingdom’s commitment to modernizing its health infrastructure.

Vision 2030: A Catalyst for Healthcare Transformation

Vision 2030, launched in 2016, was designed to position Saudi Arabia as a global leader in various sectors, with healthcare being one of the main areas of focus. The government’s substantial investment in healthcare, combined with structural reforms and an emphasis on preventative care, has helped significantly reduce mortality rates and improve overall public health. Minister Al-Jalajel attributed the sharp rise in life expectancy to these targeted initiatives, as well as to the Kingdom’s enhanced healthcare capacity, which has been bolstered by both public and private sector contributions.

Major Health Achievements

Several key health indicators have shown extraordinary improvement since the launch of Vision 2030, reflecting the impact of the Kingdom’s health reforms. Notably, the rate of traffic-related fatalities has decreased by 60% from 2016 to 2025. This decrease is largely due to stringent traffic safety measures, improved infrastructure, and better emergency response systems. With fewer lives lost in road accidents, Saudi Arabia has made remarkable strides in ensuring road safety, directly contributing to longer life expectancy.

Additionally, deaths from infectious diseases have been halved, thanks to widespread vaccination campaigns, enhanced public health education, and stronger disease surveillance systems. The reduction in deaths from communicable diseases highlights the success of the Kingdom’s public health efforts to curb outbreaks and improve overall community health.

Another critical improvement has been in the area of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which have historically been a significant cause of mortality worldwide. However, with the implementation of early detection programs, lifestyle changes, and advanced medical treatments, Saudi Arabia has seen a 40% reduction in deaths from NCDs since 2016. This achievement is especially significant as many countries continue to struggle with the rising burden of chronic diseases.

Strengthening Healthcare Access and Infrastructure

Healthcare accessibility has significantly expanded, with nearly 97.4% of the Saudi population now covered by some form of health insurance or access to healthcare services. The rapid expansion of health coverage has been a priority under Vision 2030, as the government aims to provide universal healthcare access to all citizens, regardless of location or economic status. In addition, more than 1,700 beds have been added to government hospitals, and the private sector has increased its capacity by nearly 2,900 beds. This expansion has helped reduce waiting times for treatments and improved patient outcomes.

Furthermore, the Saudi Red Crescent has successfully decreased its average emergency response time from 25 minutes in 2016 to just 10 minutes in 2025. This dramatic reduction in response time is a testament to the Kingdom’s ongoing investment in emergency medical services, which have proven essential in saving lives during critical situations.

The Kingdom’s surgical capacity has also seen a significant boost. Weekly surgeries have doubled from 6,000 in 2016 to 12,000 in 2025. This increase in surgical operations means that a greater number of patients can receive the medical interventions they need in a timely manner, leading to better health outcomes. The percentage of surgeries meeting national timing standards has increased dramatically from 60% in 2016 to 90% in 2025, further enhancing the efficiency and quality of healthcare services.

Saudi Arabia’s Ambitious Health Goals for the Future

As Saudi Arabia moves forward, the health sector is poised for even greater advancements. With the 2026 budget, the government plans to continue expanding healthcare access, improving the sustainability of services, and strengthening the nation’s health system. The goal is to not only maintain the progress achieved but to continue building capabilities that will enable Saudi Arabia to become a leading regional and global health destination.

Minister Al-Jalajel emphasized that the healthcare sector would remain a key focus in the years ahead, with a continued push for innovation, improved medical technologies, and expanded services to meet the needs of the growing population. The government is also focusing on building partnerships with international healthcare organizations to bring world-class healthcare to Saudi citizens and residents.

A Healthier Future for Saudi Arabia

The rise in life expectancy to 79.7 years in 2025 is a clear indication of Saudi Arabia’s success in its healthcare transformation. The government’s Vision 2030 has laid the foundation for a robust health system, focusing on prevention, access, and quality care. The increase in life expectancy, reduction in mortality rates, and expansion of healthcare access are a testament to the success of these efforts. As Saudi Arabia continues to build on its health achievements, the Kingdom is well-positioned to become a global leader in health and wellness, benefiting not only its citizens but also individuals from around the world who seek high-quality medical care.
