Uganda’s President Poised for Another Victory as Opposition Rejects Results

Uganda is heading toward another decisive yet deeply contested electoral outcome, with President Yoweri Museveni taking a commanding lead in presidential vote counting, while his main challenger Bobi Wine openly rejects the results and accuses the state of fraud, repression, and violence.

As ballots continue to be tallied, the election has been overshadowed by an internet shutdown, heavy security deployments, disputed killings of opposition supporters, and claims that the opposition leader has been placed under house arrest. Together, these factors have intensified domestic anxiety and international scrutiny over the credibility of Uganda’s electoral process.

Museveni’s Lead Reinforces Longstanding Dominance

Preliminary figures released by the Electoral Commission show Museveni with about 75 percent of the vote, compared with around 21 percent for Bobi Wine, based on returns from roughly 70 percent of polling stations nationwide.

At 81, Museveni is seeking a seventh term in office, which would extend his rule beyond four decades. Since taking power as a rebel leader in 1986, he has won every presidential election held under Uganda’s current system. Supporters credit him with maintaining stability and avoiding state collapse, while critics argue his longevity has come at the expense of democratic reform.

Analysts say the early figures follow a familiar pattern: strong rural support for the ruling establishment combined with the advantages of incumbency, offsetting opposition strength in urban centres.

Bobi Wine Dismisses Results and Raises Alarm

Bobi Wine, a 43-year-old musician-turned-politician whose legal name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has urged supporters to ignore what he called “fake results.” He says security forces have surrounded his residence in the Magere area of Kampala, effectively placing him under house arrest.

In public statements, Wine accused the authorities of attempting to isolate him to prevent public reaction to alleged vote manipulation. His party, the National Unity Platform, says armed officers entered the compound and blocked access.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said Wine was “a person of interest” due to his status as a presidential candidate and insisted the deployment was for his security. He denied that any formal house arrest order had been issued. Wine was similarly confined after the disputed 2021 election.

Violence Erupts as Tensions Spill Over

The political crisis deepened after at least seven opposition supporters were killed overnight in Butambala, about 55 kilometres southwest of Kampala. The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain highly contested.

Opposition MP Muwanga Kivumbi said soldiers and police fired tear gas and live ammunition at supporters gathered at his home to follow early results, claiming that up to ten people were killed inside the compound. Human rights activist Agather Atuhaire supported this account.

Police spokesperson Lydia Tumushabe rejected those claims, saying officers fired in self-defence after opposition supporters allegedly attacked a police station and planned to overrun a tallying centre. Independent verification has been difficult, partly due to restricted access and the internet shutdown.

Security Clampdown and International Reaction

Security has been tightened nationwide as counting continues. The United States Embassy issued an alert warning its citizens that security forces were using tear gas and firing into the air to disperse gatherings.

Journalists reported being blocked from accessing Bobi Wine’s home, while residents in some areas said movement was restricted as police and military patrols increased.

Internet Blackout and Election Disruptions

The election was conducted under a nationwide internet blackout imposed earlier in the week by the Uganda Communications Commission, which said the measure was intended to prevent misinformation, fraud, and incitement to violence.

The shutdown has been condemned by civil society and the United Nations Human Rights Office, which described it as “deeply worrying” and damaging to transparency.

Election day itself was marred by logistical challenges. In several regions, voting started hours late due to delayed ballot deliveries and malfunctioning biometric voter verification machines. Some observers have linked these problems to the network outage.

Electoral Commission Defends the Process

Electoral Commission chair Simon Byabakama said vote tallying had not been affected by the internet blackout, noting that results were transmitted through a private system. He said the final presidential results are expected within 48 hours.

A Familiar Outcome, Deeper Questions

Although six other candidates are contesting the presidency, the election has effectively been a two-horse race. Wine has campaigned as the voice of Uganda’s youth in a country where most citizens are under 30, promising anti-corruption reforms and democratic change. Museveni has countered that he remains the only leader capable of guaranteeing stability and progress.

If the results are confirmed, Museveni will further entrench one of Africa’s longest-running presidencies. Yet the events surrounding the vote—violence, restricted opposition activity, and contested results—suggest that while the outcome may be familiar, Uganda’s political tensions are far from resolved.

As the country awaits the final announcement, Uganda faces a volatile post-election period that will test its institutions, its security forces, and its ability to manage dissent without further bloodshed.
